What UE actually means
Not really a fault. The machine tried repeatedly to balance the drum, failed, and stopped rather than spin violently enough to damage itself. A single heavy item is the classic trigger. Newer machines show this as UB.
What causes it, most likely first
Single heavy item in the drum
Most likelyA duvet, a towelling dressing gown or a pair of jeans on their own soak up water on one side and cannot be balanced.
How to check: Open the door — if there is one big wet item bunched to one side, that is it.
Overloaded drum
CommonPacked past capacity the load cannot move enough to redistribute. Take a third out and try again.
Machine not level
CommonA machine that rocks reaches its safety limits far earlier. Very common after a machine has been moved.
How to check: Push down on each front corner in turn — any rock means the feet need adjusting.
Transit bolts still fitted
OccasionalOn a newly delivered machine, transit bolts left in the back stop the drum moving at all. Always worth checking on a recent installation.
Worn shock absorbers or suspension
OccasionalDead dampers let the drum swing beyond its safe envelope even with a sensible load. Usually accompanied by loud knocking.

How to fix it, step by step
Redistribute the load by hand
Open the door and pull the washing apart — wet laundry knots into one mass. Spread it evenly round the drum and restart a spin-only cycle.
5 minTake some out
If it is a full load, remove about a third. If it is one big item, add two or three towels to give the machine something to balance against.
5 minLevel the machine
Push each front corner down in turn. If it rocks, adjust the feet with a spanner until it sits solid, then lock the nuts.

Look at the back panel for four bolts with plastic collars. If they are still fitted they must come out — the machine will never spin with them in.

Parts you might need
Typical UK prices for the part alone, before fitting. Worth knowing before you accept a quote — the part is often a small share of what a repair is priced at.
Shock absorbers / dampers
Damp the drum as it accelerates into a spin. Worn ones let the drum hammer the cabinet on high spin speeds.
£20–£50
Worth repairing, or replace it?
At the top of this range the repair costs a significant share of a graded replacement, which typically starts around £200. Worth getting the quote first, then deciding — on a machine under about five years old a repair usually still wins.
