What E17 actually means

The board opened the inlet valve, waited, and did not see the water level rise far enough before its timeout expired. Nine times out of ten the water is simply not getting to the machine — a turned-off tap or a silted-up inlet filter — rather than anything electrical having failed.

Before you start

  • Water: Turn the water supply tap off before unscrewing the fill hose, and have a towel ready — the hose stays pressurised.

What causes it, most likely first

  1. Water supply tap turned off or partly closed

    Most likely

    Astonishingly common after a plumber has visited, after a holiday, or after someone has been under the sink. A part-open tap gives a flow too slow for the machine to accept.

    How to check: Trace the fill hose to the tap behind or under the machine and check it is fully open.

  2. Blocked inlet filter gauze

    Most likely

    There is a fine mesh gauze in the hose connection at the back of the machine to catch grit from the mains. In hard-water areas it scales up and chokes the flow.

    How to check: Turn the tap off, unscrew the fill hose from the machine, and look into the inlet port. The little plastic-rimmed gauze usually pulls out with pliers and can be rinsed and descaled.

  3. Kinked or crushed fill hose

    Common

    Pushing the machine back against the wall can crush the fill hose flat, especially where it loops tightly behind the appliance.

  4. Failed inlet solenoid valve

    Occasional

    The valve that electrically opens to admit water can fail. A valve that has failed open causes constant slow filling; one that has failed closed causes this code.

    If the level sensor cannot see the water arriving, the machine reports a fill failure even when water is going in normally. Usually accompanied by odd fill levels.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Check the tap is fully open

    Follow the blue or grey fill hose from the back of the machine to its tap and open it fully. If the machine has both hot and cold fills, check both.

  2. Confirm the tap actually delivers water

    Turn the tap off, unscrew the fill hose from the tap end, aim it into a bucket, and briefly open the tap. Strong flow means the supply is fine and the problem is downstream.

  3. Clean the inlet filter gauze

    With the tap off, unscrew the fill hose from the machine end. Inside the inlet port is a small mesh gauze. Ease it out with long-nose pliers, rinse it, and soak it in descaler or vinegar if it is furred with limescale. Push it back in squarely.

  4. Straighten the hose and reconnect

    Check the full run of the fill hose for kinks and crush points. Reconnect both ends hand-tight — these are rubber-sealed fittings and do not need a spanner. Open the tap and check for weeps.

  5. Run a short cycle and watch the fill

    Start a rinse cycle and listen. You should hear water entering within the first thirty seconds. If the code returns with a confirmed good supply and a clean gauze, the inlet valve or the level sensor is the likely culprit and it is worth a call-out.
