What H20 actually means

H20 — displayed as "H2O" on some panels — is the Hotpoint and Indesit water supply fault. The machine opened its valve and did not see the level rise in time. As with every fill fault, start at the tap and the inlet gauze before suspecting anything electrical, because that is where the answer usually is.

Before you start

  • Water: Turn the supply tap off before unscrewing the fill hose — it stays pressurised.

What causes it, most likely first

  1. Water tap turned off or partly closed

    Most likely

    The commonest cause by far, and frequently follows plumbing work or a period away from home.

    How to check: Trace the fill hose to its tap and open it fully.

  2. Blocked inlet filter gauze

    Most likely

    A fine mesh in the machine's inlet port scales up in hard-water areas and chokes the flow to below what the machine will accept.

  3. Kinked fill hose

    Common

    Crushed flat where the machine has been pushed back against the wall.

  4. Blocked pressure switch hose

    Occasional

    The level sensor cannot see the water arriving, so the machine reports a fill failure while filling normally. Often paired with over-filling.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Open the tap fully

    Follow the fill hose to its tap and make sure it is fully open. If the machine has separate hot and cold fills, check both.

  2. Prove the supply

    Turn the tap off, unscrew the hose at the tap end, aim it into a bucket and briefly open the tap. A strong flow tells you the supply is fine.

  3. Clean the inlet gauze

    With the tap off, unscrew the hose at the machine end. Ease the mesh gauze out of the inlet port with long-nose pliers, rinse it, and descale it in vinegar if it is furred. Refit it squarely.

  4. Reconnect and test

    Straighten the hose, reconnect both ends hand-tight, open the tap and check for leaks. Run a rinse cycle and listen for water entering within thirty seconds.
